Fort Myers Beach's North End This Season: Getting to the Sand While the Pier Is Rebuilt

For years, a beach day on the north end of Estero Island usually started at one of two county lots. One was Bowditch Point Regional Park at the island's tip. The other was Lynn Hall Memorial Park next to the pier. This winter, both lots are behind construction fencing. Pile drivers are working between them where the old pier stood.

The sand stays open to the public all season, but the ways to reach it have changed. This season, the north end runs on the Town's small beach-access lots, the trolley and free tram, and Crescent Beach Family Park. The places that carried the load before are fenced.

What's fenced, what's open, and for how long

Lee County started a set of Hurricane Ian restoration projects on Sept. 8. The county says it could start because federal reimbursement for the work came through. It also says "beaches will remain open throughout the projects." Here's where the north end stands heading into November 2026:

Site Status this season Expected back
Bowditch Point Regional Park, 50 Estero Blvd. Fenced, no parking; walk-in beach access on the south side near Pink Shell Most county projects run about 11 months from Sept. 8
Lynn Hall Memorial Park lot, 950 Estero Blvd. Closed since April 6 for the elevated restroom build Late April or early May 2027
Fort Myers Beach Pier Active construction on the beach and in the water On track for 2027
Crescent Beach Family Park, Times Square Reopened late July after a county facelift Open now

At Bowditch, the county's Sept. 2 release lists repairs to park buildings, boardwalks, parking areas, sidewalks, picnic areas, beach access points and trails. It also mentions a planned dredging operation. The county says the dredging won't affect the beach, and you can still walk to the beach from the south. The release gives no Bowditch-specific reopening date. The 11-month figure is the county's estimate for most of its projects. Check the fencing and signs before you plan around it.

The front door moves to the Town's side streets

With both county lots closed, the Town of Fort Myers Beach's own spaces handle most of the parking. Those are the small blue-signed lots at the beach-access streets and the lots by Matanzas Pass Bridge. Three numbers matter this season.

The meter rate went up. As of Oct. 1, the Town's rate is $6 an hour, up from $5. The Fort Myers Beach Observer reported that the Town would honor the old $5 signs until they were replaced. Meters are enforced from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, holidays included.

The resident permit now costs $75. The Town raised it this year from $50. It's available at Town Hall, 6231 Estero Blvd., to residents of Estero Island from bridge to bridge. An off-island address doesn't qualify, even with a Fort Myers Beach mailing address. Permits renew yearly.

There's a new $300 nonresident pass. This is the one to tell friends in Cape Coral or Fort Myers about. The Town is issuing up to 500 of them. They're good through Dec. 31, 2027, and sold only at Bay Oaks Recreational Campus. About 70 sold on the first day. The pass covers Matanzas Pass Bridge Lots 1 through 4 and the Town's beach-access spaces at Aberdeen, Bayview, Coconut, Connecticut, Dakota, Delmar, Flamingo, Gulf, Hercules, Lanark, Mango, Palm, Pompano, Seaview and Strandview. It does not cover street meters, private lots or the Waistina Way lot next to Margaritaville Beach Resort. It also doesn't cover any county park, including Crescent Beach Family Park. For rules on fines, tickets and appeals, see the Town's parking page.

Leaving the car off the island

When the north end has fewer spaces, the trolley makes more sense. The Beach Park & Ride at 11101 Summerlin Square Drive connects to Route 490, which runs to Crescent Beach. Route 410 covers the island from Bowditch Point Park to Lovers Key State Park. When the Lynn Hall work began, the Fort Myers Beach Observer noted that the Summerlin Square lot has 125 free spaces and has historically seen less use than the county lots on the island.

Compared with an hour at the meter, the fares are small:

  • 75 cents a ride, $2 for an all-day pass, $4 for a three-day pass
  • 35 cents for seniors 65 and older, riders with disabilities and full-time students
  • Free for children 6 and under
  • Exact change only, or pay cashless through the LeeFare app

The free Route 420 beach tram is a seasonal service from November through April. It runs between Bowditch Point Park and the Fort Myers Beach Public Library from 8:20 a.m. to 10:55 p.m. daily, about every 30 to 40 minutes. LeeTran doesn't run on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day, which matters if guests plan to take the trolley over the holidays. Current timetables are on the Chamber's trolley page and through LeeTran.

Crescent Beach Family Park is the open door at Times Square

The Route 490 trolley ends at Crescent Beach Family Park, the one county park in the Times Square area that's open right now. It reopened the week of July 29 after about six months of work. The Fort Myers Beach Observer described it as a $1.3 million Lee County project with new grass, shade trees and shade structures. The county's plan, reported by Gulf Coast News, also called for a redesigned pedestrian layout, bike racks and four beach access points, one of them ADA-compliant.

More than 100 people gathered there on Aug. 21 for the pier groundbreaking. The park sits right at the edge of the work zone. That makes it the closest open green space to the pier, and the spot where you can see the noise and progress up close.

Walking past the pier zone

The rules here changed during the fall. In August, people coming from other access points could still walk the sand past the pier site and swim near Lynn Hall. By late October, the Chamber's Oct. 22 project update asked pedestrians to take a detour off the beach and along Estero Boulevard instead of walking through the water and the construction zone.

If your usual walk goes from the Pink Shell end toward the Lani Kai end, here's what crews are asking:

  1. Don't set up blankets or tents right next to the construction fence.
  2. Stay outside the fence, barriers and restricted areas.
  3. Skip swimming, wading, fishing and boating near the work.
  4. Follow directions from the construction crew.

The new pier needs 108 piles, and in September crews expected to set about three a day, according to a Sept. 18 project update. During that phase, a 150-foot safety perimeter goes up around the work each morning and comes down at the end of the day. As of the Oct. 22 update, production pile driving was starting, with more noise and noticeable vibration. Drivers on Estero Boulevard near Times Square should expect short delays while flaggers bring delivery trucks into the site.

The season's big nights happen away from the fence

The construction zone takes up the heart of Times Square, but most of this season's events are somewhere else. They're spread along Estero Boulevard and the back bay, so you can plan each night around a different place:

  • Illuminations Parade, Saturday, Nov. 7, 5:30 to 8 p.m., starting at Sandy Bottoms Bar & Grill, 2301 Estero Blvd.
  • 36th Annual American Sand Sculpting Championship, Nov. 19 to 23 at DiamondHead Beach Resort, with family sand-play areas, live entertainment and food vendors.
  • Christmas Boat Parade, Dec. 5. Boats gather at Salty Sam's Marina and leave at 6 p.m., passing waterfront restaurants, Matanzas Pass Bridge and the Siesta Isles canals.
  • Christmas Tree Festival & Holiday Raffle, Dec. 11 and 12, hosted by the Fort Myers Beach Women's Club. It's free, and decorated trees and wreaths are auctioned for island causes.
  • Merry Misfits Bike & Golf Cart Parade, Dec. 19. Decorated bikes, scooters and golf carts collect toys and gifts for local families.
  • New Year's Eve fireworks, Dec. 31, hosted by the Town and What's Up FMB, launched from a barge offshore. Crowds gather along the shoreline and in Times Square.

Times and details for the December events are still filling in. The What's Up FMB events page is the place to check closer to each date.

A few new places opened this year. Island View Sports Bar held its grand opening Oct. 1 on the sixth floor of Lani Kai Island Resort, 1400 Estero Blvd. It sits beside the Sun Deck with a game room next door, and it's open daily from 11 a.m. to midnight. Jersey Mike's Subs opened in July at 1661 Estero Blvd., Unit 7. At Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina, Aquagene Spa reopened to the public in May for the first time since Ian, with five treatment rooms and saunas.

What the fences are building

Each closure on the north end comes with something specific when it reopens. The Lynn Hall lot returns with 146 spaces, 10 of them for motorcycles. It also gets an elevated restroom building, ADA-accessible boardwalks, picnic shelters, landscaping and lighting. The $6 million contract includes three 625-square-foot picnic shelters with grills.

The pier is being rebuilt wider and longer than the one Ian destroyed. At the groundbreaking, Lee County Commissioner Cecil Pendergrass told the Fort Myers Beach Observer, "We chose to make it bigger and better." Gulf Coast News reported expected completion in late August 2027. Next to the pier, Terry Persaud's Sunset Beach Resort project at Times Square broke ground in July. He told the Observer he hopes to finish it around the time the pier opens, in September 2027, and to bring back the former Pierside Grill and Famous Blowfish Bar as the "new Pierside."

Until then, the Town's beach-access lots, the trolley and Crescent Beach Family Park are how most people will reach the north end's beach.
